Latgalian Language Course from 26 October
Would you like to learn a new language and also be a part of a unique language course? House of Languages in Latvia is organising the first ever Latgalian language online course for beginners without prior knowledge of Latvian.
The Latgalian language was historically used in Latgola, the Eastern part of Latvia. Written Latgalian stems from the beginning of the 18th century, and thrived in the beginning of the 20th century until the authoritarian nationalist regime in 1934 and the Soviet 
occupation of Latvia, when it was oppressed. Although Latvia regained its independence in 1991, the Latgalian language has still not regained the status it had 100 years ago. Teacher Vineta Vilcāne has been a prominent Latgalian language activist for several years and is the manager of several projects for the development of Latgalian.
Course scope:
- 32 academic hours (45 minutes), 16 lessons
- Tuesdays and Thursdays, 19:00-20:45 (EEST) (including a break) on Zoom.
- The course will start on the 26th October and it will go on till mid December.

Price: 30 € for the whole course, electronic materials included.
The course is part of a new project subsidised by the Latgalian Culture Foundation. The materials used in the course will be used to prepare and publish a one of a kind Latgalian textbook for beginners with preexisting knowledge of Latvian, Russian and English. With your participation you are helping us to create this amazing textbook!
Who can participate?
The course is meant for those with no preexisting knowledge or minimal prior knowledge of Latgalian and Standard Latvian, however, you should have at least intermediate knowledge of English.As the number of places inon the course is limited, please send us a short email briefly describing why you would like to join the course by 20 October. The course is organized during the project “Mācību grāmata “Latgaliešu valodu sācējiem” / “Latgalīšu volūda suoiciejim”” (Textbook “Latgalian for the Beginners”) and is supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation, Latvian State Forests and Latgale Region Development Agency within the Latgale Cultural Program 2021.
